Description

This one-hour training session is designed to empower participants with the tools and insights needed to excel in working with diverse populations, highlighting essential non-discrimination requirements as outlined in Section 1557, effective collaboration with interpreters, and strategies for culturally competent client engagement.

The ability to successfully navigate communication, language, and cultural differences in serving a diverse community is a skill in high demand in 2024, especially in healthcare, social work, and case work. With the May 6 release of the Affordable Care Act’s Section 1557 Final Rule, principles of cultural competence and nondiscrimination are key in ensuring legal compliance.

This training is designed to educate participants on the fundamental aspects of Section 1557, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability in health programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of their responsibilities under this regulation, including the provision of language assistance services and the importance of cultural competency in their practice.

Participants will learn best practices for working with interpreters and addressing the unique needs of clients from diverse cultural backgrounds.

 

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand Key Requirements of Section 1557:

  • Participants will outline the key provisions of Section 1557 and their impact on their daily practice.
  • Participants will identify the characteristics of effective language access based on Section 1557 Final Rule definitions.

 

2. Demonstrate Effective Collaboration with Interpreters:

  • Participants will mirror steps to effectively work with interpreters, ensuring accurate and complete communication.
  • Participants will identify the benefits of briefing and debriefing interpreters to enhance communication outcomes.

 

3. Identify Strategies for Cultural Competency in Client Interactions:

  • Participants will distinguish between culturally based communication styles and learn strategies to address these in their work.

 

Presenter:

Graciela Zozaya

Graciela, Strategic Solutions Executive, joined MasterWord in 2018 bringing over 30 years of expertise in language access, with a significant focus on supporting government sector clients. Her extensive experience includes advising government organizations nationwide on best practices for working with interpreters, ensuring compliance with language access regulations, and providing critical guidance on effective communication strategies. Graciela has also developed training programs tailored to interpreters of indigenous languages, focusing on the rules of interpreting in U.S. court systems.

A leader in the language professional community, Graciela currently serves on the Board of the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC) and has previously held key positions with the Houston Interpreters and Translators Association (HITA) and the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI).

Originally from Mexico City, Graciela has lived in the Houston area for over 30 years. She is a Certified Medical Interpreter, a Master Licensed Court Interpreter, and an ATA Certified Translator, fluent in both English and Spanish.
